>>Was so annoyed when i read this, therefore, I commented in that webpage
Hi all, I am very concerned with MM Lee's comments abt legalising homosexuality.
Check out Asiaone and today's Straits Times:
Asiaone: "They tell me that homosexuals are creative writers, dancers. If we want creative people, then we have to put up with their idiosyncrasies," Lee, 83, told Reuters on Tuesday.
"Let's not pretend it doesn't exist," Lee said in an exclusive interview, adding he saw no option but to legalise homosexual sex.
In Straits Times, he mentioned if homosexuals are accepted by the world, and because Singapore is part of the world, Singapore have to follow suit or something to that effect. ( Please correct my quote if I am wrong as I do not have the paper with me)
I am not against people who are homosexual as they are deem to have issues with their sexual identities. I am against passing laws which legalises homosexual practice, lifestyle, and same-sex marriages. Such practices go agianst the law of procreation. How are we to explain what is right and what is wrong to the next generation?
A basic family unit is made up of a Dad, Mum and kids. It is in the natural world and has been ever since man walked on earth. Are we to legalise practices which goes against nature just because of a special interest group who happen to be well-articulated then most?
Aren't we taught to think for ourselves? If we do know that such values which sometimes West hold are wrong, why should we have to embrace it to 'Join the club' and not seen as a 'party pooper'? Not everything which the West promote is good/healthy/positive to our community. Doesn't gay practices promote spread of HIV? This will cost the community, both socially and financially.
By legalising homosexuality, we are eroding away our values and also desensitizing ourselves as people. We have to make a stand what is morally right or wrong, regardless of what others think of us.
First we allow gambling into Singapore and now we consider legalising Homosexual practice. What next? Gays do not have to do NS?
Legalise the right to bear arms?
Legalise drugs? Holland has done this.
Legalise incest? Well if the world is ok Singapore is ok as well?
Legalise bestiality?
Legalise underage sex?
All this can come true if they have a strong special interest support group. We know homsexuals exist and have a very strong lobby. But we should be attacking the issues of homosexual behavior/ practice, not the people. Legalising will not solve the problem but perpetuate more problems and costs into our society.
I believe if we allow the interests and rights of individuals or special groups to be more important than the community as a whole, Singapore will suffer and not remain as the great country which MM Lee and his team built from scratch with their sweat and blood.
I really hope our current govt debate this with a clear mind and not succumb to the pressure of the world around us. I believe Singaporeans can still build a first class nation without adopting such 'sub-cultures'.
Respond to above:
This is a globalised world where we no long stay at home and pretend that the world is filled with love and passion. Many societies have a common "dog eat dog" phenomenon, and it is no longer surprsing. Today's world, with modern techonology and science advancements, we are beginning to question about issues of the world. We no longer accept fate and values as it is.
Who in the world said that homosexuality is wrong? And who says it's correct? "Gray areas" are beginning to surface, and it is just inevitable. It's just like Main stream news is no longer a "major power" to the conveying of news, as modern citizens do not want to only hear "gospels from god", many are choosing alternatives to understand greater depths of issues.
Homosexual can be a sub-culture or even the "pathetic" minorities, However, this is a world where "rights" can be deabted forever, there may not be a conclusion that satisfies every individuals. Whether one like homosexuals or not, none can totally eradicate it from any society. Even in ancient China where "values" and "morals" are uphold, records "Long Yang" and "Duan Xiu" (homosexuals) are evident.
If there is no wrong or no right, and it does not affect the welfare of one, why not? Homosexuals are still humans at the end of the day, just beacuse they special liking for the same gender, does not mean that they do not enjoy the same rights as a country's citizens. Why can't we just use a broader heart to accept phenomenon, which are inevitable. Singapore lacks talents as mentioned in the National Day Rally, as Humans (though homosexuals), they can also contribute to the society with their talents.
Discrimination happens all around the world, but it did not expect one to be so against the idea of homosexuality. If a parent is capable, and "morals" are so strong in the family, parents can easily teach their children what is right of wrong, and not point finger at others for what they are.
Identity is important and essential in today's society, if a country cannot recognise one's identity, in a globalised world like today, one is free and have the mobility to move around. And that country may lose a talent to contribute for the country.
As a very traditional Chinese like me, I discourage homosexuality, but I do not discriminate or look down upon them. Ask yourself this question, if you are a homosexual, will you want to be discriminated for who you are? At a macro view, one can hold strongly against homosexual, but can he stop it, totally? Can he pretend that it does not exists? Or rather, why would MM Lee allow homosexual to be in the civil service?
Life is full of uncertianties and gray areas, many phenomenon, morals, ethics, and values where we used to "believe" are very questionable today. This is due to the fact of higher literacy rate and government's encouragement developing thinking skills.
We need to be proud of who we are, and be tolerent of those who are not like us; discrimination and prejudice against one's liking and sexual orientation is not productive in today's globalised economy.
Respect is important, we need to be tolerant, as we do not know what the future holds. If one is resilient enough, he or she should not fear changes or point fingers at the change or blame other for the change. This is a cosmopolitan society, and social cohesion will bring us a long way. =) Let us have a more open mind.
